Previously, from 1998–2003, he was Executive Director of the WHO Infectious disease Cluster and from October 1995 to July 1998 he was Director of the WHO Programme on Emerging and other Catching Diseases. Prior to this, he was the principal of inquiry activities in the WHO Global Programme on AIDS.
Heymann was too chairman of the Strategic Advisory Grouping of Hilleman Laboratories.
Heymann is Visiting Professor in the Department of Medicine at the National University of Singapore, and an Associate Provost (Health Affairs).
Before joining WHO, Heymann worked for 13 years as a medical epidemiologist in sub-Saharan Africa on assignment from the US Centers for Illness Control and Prevention (CDC). I suppose if the cardboard wasn't so thick it could have been worse !!"
